Sunroom Furniture Ideas – Decorating Sunrooms with Indoor Rattan Wicker
Sunrooms have become one of the most sought after rooms to have in a home. They are a great area for entertaining, relaxing, and enjoying the outdoors from the inside of your house. But what is the best way to decorate a sunroom, screened porch, or solarium? Here are some great sunroom furniture ideas.
Indoor sunroom furniture does not have quite the durability that patio furniture has. This is because it is not meant to be exposed to the weather like furnishings that are on a porch. With that being said, however, certain types of outdoor seating options are great for decorating sunrooms.
Although sunrooms are indoors, an outdoor theme is among the top ideas for decor. Wicker rattan furniture is one type that works well as indoor sunroom furniture because it has a natural yet cozy look and feel. There are many pieces available including chairs, sofas, loveseats, coffee tables and side tables. You can purchase an entire set that matches, or choose pieces that contrast. Add a few plants, some great cushions, and a few other decorative nature accessories and your room will look great.
Another approach is to use more traditional styles of decorating, such as Ashley furniture and wood tables. Many people prefer this type of atmosphere because the furniture is softer and the room feels more like a typical living room. As far as style goes, this may not look as good as rattan furniture, but it may be more comfortable to some.
Whether you choose patio furniture or a more traditional indoor style, there are many different shapes, sizes, and variations available for sunrooms. These are just a few of many ideas that are out there to help you with decorating your home.
Choosing the Right Sofa When Decorating Your Home
Buying a sofa, couch, or furniture suite is a major investment, so take more than just looks into account. Give size, comfort, construction, and the type of covering careful consideration, too.
The discomfort of sitting on a worn or badly made sofa or armchair is all too familiar. A sofa with broken springs or seat cushions that have so little padding you feel as if you are sitting directly on the base is uncomfortable and, if you sit in it for any length of time, can lead to troublesome aches and pains.
Comfortable and adequate living-room seating is therefore an essential purchase for your home. If your sofa and chairs are worn or uncomfortable, buying new ones should be high on your list of priorities when redecorating. As with most purchases, cost reflects quality and it is worth allocating as much money as you can afford.
Your reward is a sofa or suite that will give you many years of relaxing service.
One of the main considerations is whether to buy a suite, a unit system or sofas and armchairs separately. The advantage of buying a suite – consisting of a sofa and two matching armchairs – is that you can make considerable savings. Furniture retailers are usually able to offer suites at more competitive prices than buying the items individually. However, a suite may not offer the flexibility that you are looking for or suit the room, so it is worth taking the time to plan what arrangement and size of furniture best fits the space before making the final decision.
Size Considerations:
Before you even start looking for a sofa or couch, you need to decide on the size. Sofas tend to look smaller in a large showroom, so it is easy to make a mistake and be misled into thinking a large sofa will fit in your living room at home and, just as importantly, through your doorways.
To avoid this, measure your room and the relevant doorways and draw up a scale plan, including major items of furniture. Use the plan to determine what size and configuration of chairs and sofas best suits the room.
Consider the proportions of the room in relation to the height and depth of the sofa. There is a lot of variation in the height of different sofas according to their style, and if the ceilings are low, a high-backed sofa may dwarf the space just as much as a sofa that is too large.
Also use the simple rule that dark colors advance and pale ones recede – a light sofa makes a room look larger than a darker one. Always take a tape measure with you when you shop to doublecheck measurements.
Small-Space Decorating
You don’t have to live in a cramped studio apartment to appreciate the value of small-space decorating-even if you’re fortunate enough to have decent-size rooms, it doesn’t hurt to incorporate a few space-saving techniques. Here are some of my favorites:
Go light with color. Light, subdued hues make a space seem larger while darker, heavier colors can weigh a room down. Create a soft, monochromatic color scheme to give the illusion of more space. This doesn’t mean your rooms have to be boring beige-try soft hues of green or yellow instead. Go ahead and throw in touches of darker or more vibrant colors too on smaller furnishings, artwork, and accessories.
Add illumination. A well-lit room appears larger than one that’s lacking light. Supplement overhead illumination with floor and table lamps. Consider adding easy-to-install track lighting to the ceiling. And take advantage of accent lighting too-directing light upward at a specific piece of artwork or adding cove lighting near the ceiling is a nice decorative touch.
Use multifunctional furnishings. I think storage cubes are the epitome of multifunctional-as a pair they make a cool coffee table, plus they provide additional seating when needed, feature handy trays for serving beverages, and can be used to store blankets, games, you name it. (Of course, I may be a little biased because I own a pair.) A sleeper sofa is a great invention too-it provides super seating by day and a bed for guests at night.
Keep furniture to scale. In small rooms, opt for scaled-down furnishings such as open-back chairs, low tables, and simple love seats rather than large, overstuffed pieces.
Arrange it well. Create intimate seating arrangements out of the way of traffic flow. Angle furnishings in a triangle or arrange them around an attractive rug to create a “furniture island.”
Avoid overwhelming patterns. Pick one focal-point pattern or fabric and keep the rest simple. Follow this rule: pick smaller patterns on large furnishings, medium patterns on medium furnishings, and large patterns on small items such as pillows. Or forgo patterns altogether and opt for textured upholstery, fabrics, and wall treatments instead.
Look up. Draw eyes upward and create the appearance of height by painting or wallpapering vertical stripes on walls, hanging artwork higher than eye level, or adding white crown molding to draw attention to where your walls and ceiling meet.
Expand your space with glass and mirrors. Trick the eye into thinking a space is bigger than it really is. Read more on specific techniques here.
Flaunt your views. Take advantage of great views by carefully selecting window treatments that add style without overwhelming your windows.
Clear the clutter. Select a few key decorative pieces and artful accents to showcase on shelves and tabletops. Store what you can’t part with under the bed and in closets. Then save, toss, or donate the rest.
